How to Store Cannabis Properly: Keep Your Buds Fresh

Why Proper Cannabis Storage Matters

You’ve invested in quality cannabis — now make sure you’re storing it properly. Poor storage is the fastest way to turn premium buds into dry, harsh, flavourless flower. Proper storage preserves potency, flavour, aroma, and smoothness for weeks or even months.

This guide covers everything you need to know about keeping your cannabis fresh, from the science behind degradation to practical storage tips.

The Four Enemies of Fresh Cannabis

1. Light

UV light is the single biggest factor in cannabis degradation. UV rays break down THC into CBN (a less psychoactive cannabinoid) and degrade terpenes. A study from the University of London found that light exposure was the greatest contributor to cannabinoid degradation over time. Always store cannabis in a dark place or in opaque containers.

2. Air (Oxygen)

Oxygen causes oxidation, which degrades both cannabinoids and terpenes. Too much air in your container accelerates this process. Use airtight containers sized appropriately for your quantity — a half-full jar means half the jar is air.

3. Temperature

Heat accelerates the degradation of cannabinoids and terpenes and can also promote mould growth. Temperatures above 25°C (77°F) can dry out buds and cause terpene evaporation. Store in a cool place between 15-21°C (60-70°F).

4. Humidity

Too much moisture promotes mould and mildew (dangerous to inhale), while too little makes buds crumbly and harsh. The ideal relative humidity (RH) for cannabis storage is 55-62%.

Best Storage Containers

Glass Mason Jars (Best Overall)

Glass is non-porous, doesn’t leach chemicals, and provides an excellent airtight seal. Mason jars with rubber-gasket lids are the gold standard for home cannabis storage. Choose amber or frosted glass to block light, or store clear jars in a dark cupboard.

Vacuum-Sealed Containers

For long-term storage, vacuum-sealed containers remove excess oxygen and create an ideal low-oxygen environment. Just be careful not to crush your buds — vacuum seal gently or use hard-sided vacuum containers.

Stainless Steel Containers

A solid alternative to glass. Stainless steel is lightproof, airtight (with proper lids), and virtually indestructible. Many cannabis-specific storage containers use medical-grade stainless steel.

What to Avoid

  • Plastic bags: Static charge pulls trichomes off buds; plastic can leach chemicals; not airtight
  • Plastic containers: Better than bags but still prone to static and chemical leaching over time
  • Aluminium foil: Not airtight, can tear, provides no humidity control
  • The original dispensary bag: Fine for a day or two, not for storage

Humidity Control

Humidity packs (like Boveda or Integra Boost) are the easiest way to maintain optimal humidity. These two-way humidity control packs regulate moisture in both directions — adding humidity if buds are too dry and absorbing excess if they’re too moist.

  • 62% RH packs — ideal for most cannabis storage
  • 58% RH packs — preferred by some users, especially for cannabis that will be vaped (slightly drier is better for vaporisers)
  • Replace packs every 2-3 months or when they become hard/crunchy

Long-Term Storage Tips

If you’re storing cannabis for more than a few weeks:

  • Use vacuum-sealed glass containers with humidity packs
  • Store in a cool, dark location (a closet shelf or drawer is ideal)
  • Don’t open the container more than necessary — each opening introduces fresh air
  • Label containers with the strain name and date of storage
  • Check monthly for any signs of mould (white fuzzy spots distinct from trichomes)

Common Storage Mistakes

  • The freezer myth: Don’t freeze cannabis. Freezing makes trichomes brittle and causes them to break off when handled. The only exception is long-term storage for making concentrates.
  • The grinder stockpile: Don’t grind more than you’ll use in a session. Ground cannabis loses potency and flavour much faster than whole buds.
  • Mixing strains: Store different strains separately. Mixing them in one container blends the terpene profiles and makes it impossible to appreciate each strain’s unique characteristics.
  • Leaving buds in the original packaging: Dispensary containers are designed for temporary transport, not storage.
  • Storing near electronics: Heat from electronics (game consoles, computers, etc.) can warm nearby containers and degrade your stash.

Signs Your Cannabis Has Gone Bad

  • Harsh, hot smoke: Overdried cannabis burns too hot and irritates the throat
  • Loss of smell: If your buds have little to no aroma, the terpenes have degraded
  • Crumbles to dust: Way too dry — humidity was too low or storage too warm
  • Mould/mildew: White fuzzy spots that look different from trichomes. If in doubt, don’t smoke it
  • Hay smell: Indicates improper curing or degradation of terpenes

Quick Storage Checklist

  • Glass container (mason jar or dedicated cannabis jar)
  • Airtight seal
  • Dark storage location
  • Cool temperature (15-21°C / 60-70°F)
  • Humidity pack (62% RH)
  • Appropriately sized container (minimal air space)
  • Labelled with strain and date
