Cannabis concentrates: shatter, live resin and more
Cannabis concentrates are the strong parts of the plant with the leaf taken away. Shatter, live resin, budder, diamonds and hash are all concentrates. A tiny bit holds far more THC than the same amount of flower.
Because they are so strong, concentrates are not for beginners. Most people dab them, which means you heat a tiny bit on a hot surface and breathe in the vapour. Start low and go slow with any concentrate.
Know the main types
Shatter is hard and clear, like glass, and budder is soft, like thick icing. Live resin is made from fresh-frozen plants, so it keeps more flavour. Diamonds are THC crystals, and they are among the strongest.
Use a low heat
A cooler dab tastes better and is easier on your throat. If your rig has no heat setting, let it cool for 30 to 45 seconds after you heat it. Too much heat burns away the taste.
Not ready to dab
Hash and tinctures are easier ways to start, because neither one needs a rig. You can crumble hash onto flower. A tincture is a liquid that you drop under your tongue.
Common questions
How much is one dab?
Start with a piece smaller than a grain of rice. One gram holds many, many dabs, so do not use it the way you use flower.
How strong are concentrates?
They are much stronger than flower. You feel a dab almost right away, and it can last one to three hours. Wait at least 15 minutes before you take a second one.
What is the difference between shatter and live resin?
Shatter is hard and snaps like glass, so it is easy to break into small doses. Live resin is soft and wet, with more of the smell and taste of the plant.
What do I need to use concentrates?
Most people use a dab rig or a dab pen. If you have no gear, a vape pen is an easier place to start.
