Magic mushrooms: shrooms made simple

Magic mushrooms, or shrooms, are mushrooms that contain psilocybin. Psilocybin changes how you see, think and feel for a few hours. They are sold dried, or made into capsules, gummies, chocolate and drinks.

Shrooms take about 30 to 60 minutes to start working, and the effects last 4 to 6 hours. How it goes depends on your dose, your mood and where you are, so start low and go slow.

Microdose or full dose

A microdose is a very small dose that you can barely feel, often about 100 to 250 mg of dried mushroom. A full dose is many times bigger, and it changes what you see and feel. Know which one you are taking.

Read the label on capsules and treats

Capsules, gummies and chocolate come already measured. The label shows the total amount in the pack, so divide it by the number of pieces to find one dose. You do not need a scale.

Pick a safe place

Take shrooms somewhere calm that you know well, with a sober friend you trust nearby. Clear your day first. Do not drive, and do not mix them with alcohol.

Common questions

How much should a first-timer take?

Take a small amount and wait at least two hours before you think about more. You can always take more next time, but you cannot take less once it is in.

How are shrooms different from weed?

Shrooms last longer and feel very different, because colours, sounds and thoughts can change a lot. Plan for a full afternoon or evening with nothing else to do.

How long do dried shrooms keep?

Dried and sealed, away from light and damp, they keep for 6 to 12 months. If they feel soft or smell bad, throw them out.
